Strategy Writeup

Varren Ovrin, The Vilest Hatred is a venom based Mage Boss. He predominatly uses poison darts that are projected and used in multiple formations. There will be quick visual queues that determine the next formation or attack. Along with his mage powers, he also has two basic melee attacks. As he dagger appears, you can expect a quick stabbing lunge from him. Sometimes this attack double and he will deal two lunges at a time. This is a perfect time to reposition behind him to deal as many melee attacks before his next move since the area of damage is predictable and direct. During this move, be wary as he can quickly change directions and stab behind him so be read to reposition. While he is still lunging, a safe spot to attack him would be directly in front of the mage.

His second melee attack is the slash which occurs when he  equips his half spear that looks like a scythe. It makes a large rotational attack, so this time players won't be safe remaining directly in front of him. Step back away from his general vicinity. Though it is just a melee attack, it can incapacitate you for a second and you will not be prepared or in an ideal position for his next attack.

When anticipating his poison dart formations, there are two types of sets. One set has a projecting arch formation where a set of darts shoot out and fall. These project directly in the direction he is facing. He can shoot more than one set at a time, forming a cluster and forcing you to leave the area of attack. If you are lucky enough to have him only deal one set and you weren't quick enough to leave the area, there area gaps in between the singular darts where you can avoid taking damage. Since the darts fall in front of him, you may reposition yourself close behind him during this attack sequence.

Another formation for these darts can be anticipated when you see a vague outline of the circle. What happens next is the darts appear and they start shooting within the circle and then the circle disappears and the darts follow through outside the circle and dissipate themselves. As soon as you see this circle step out of it if you are within its vicinity. This will give you another opening to attack him since the area of attack is condensed to within that circle.

Lastly area the poisonous clouds that he can summon. These will harder to avoid as they appear  parallel to the floor and each cloud takes up q large space, not leaving a huge gap between them. Multiple appear at a very short amount of time. Try to leave the battle platform to position yourself on a space where the cloud had already occupied and disappeared to avoid taking damage. Use opportunities to attack when he is stabbing, using his poison darts and venom cluster and always position yourself where he is vulnerable or not facing. Deal attacks at the openings and repeat until his HP is depleted and you are free to devour the mage.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Venomous Daggers Varren Ovrin raises one hand, conjuring a venomous dagger in it. After a brief delay, he stabs diagonally towards the front of his legs and then quickly follows up with his other hand from the lowered position. The second strike has a longer horizontal travel but the Mage cannot change directions in the middle of the combo so simply dodge through him during the first attack.
Arcing Stab Varren Ovrin raises one hand behind his head as a venomous dagger manifests in it. He then performs a stab with a large arcing motion above his head and in front of him, ending with the dagger in the ground. He then drags the dagger backwards along the ground a short distance. All motions in this attack have a hitbox and can deal damage but all can be avoided by rolling away from the Mage.
Venomous Needles Varren Ovrin leans back slightly while raising both hands in front of him as they glow green. After a brief delay, he fires several green projectiles in front of him which travel in a small arc, falling to the ground shortly after release. These projectiles will deal damage to anything in their path but again, the Mage cannot change directions once he initiates this move so dodge through him to completely avoid the needles. He will sometimes perform an alternate version of this which starts with the same telegraph but instead of firing the needles, he summons several small green arcs in a circular formation around an area. After a brief delay, the arcs each shoot a needle into the inner part of the circle. Simply avoid the circular formation in this case.
Homing Needles Varren Ovrin holds one hand in front of him around waist-high with his palm faced up while holding the other high up behind his head as it glows green. After a brief delay, he releases a fan of 5 needles from the glowing hand which travel in a large cone, eventually homing in on the player. Each needle has the same travel speed and all of them can be dodged with a single well-timed roll as they approach.
Venomous Clouds arren Ovrin moves his hands in a slow circular motion right in front of his torso and then brings each hand up to the sides past his shoulders. After this, several small orbs of venomous clouds appear at the player's location. Each cloud will appear at the player's current location after a very short interval. You should keep on the move for the duration of the spell to avoid the clouds. Simply running around will do the trick.

The green knight under this guy's arena is more dangerous than him. The Cryomancer and Pyromancer are more threatening.

So I killed the mage, but then that ******* knight underneath the arena jumped up and killed me, and when I came back, all the loot was still there, but the mage's body wasn't anywhere. Does that mean I lost the chance to talk to him, and get the extra loot?
